Meeting Reports The regular meeting of LIEVT was held at the Copiague Fire District on January 25, 2018. The members enjoyed an excellent dinner and dessert and were made to feel welcome by the Copiague officers and men.

The president, Bill D’Alessandro, opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and a minute of silence for Danny Peluso, our vice-president, who passed away, past members and our service people. The November 30 meeting at Bay Shore was cancelled because of Danny’s death. In November we had a get together of the members at the Wantaugh Fire Department to remember Danny.

The members voted to set aside a page in the minutes in memory of Danny. The election of officers was held. Bill D’Alessandro was reelected president, Barbara was reelected treasurer and John Manetta of Copiague was elected vice-president. Steve Velazquez, a former president, said he will be available to give Bill D’Alessandro any help he needs.

Barbara Connolly, our treasurer, talked about membership and dues. Our finances are in good shape. She discussed the void that Danny left. Until his recent illness, he made sure our members were prepared to sit for tests as well as preparing instructions for programs. It is clear that our members will have to step up to the plate – they will have to be involved in arranging programs. Jason Witmer of Safe Fleet is going to do a two part class – back up cameras and roll-up doors.

Bill introduced Jeffrey Gaskin of East West Fire Apparatus Consultants – he is also one of our members. He did an excellent power point presentation on the purchase of fire apparatus. He discussed everything from the initial planning right through factory visits to delivery. He related some stories about committees that were almost comical. He stressed that everything should be written down and one person should be assigned to represent the committee in talks with the manufacturer. Our member, Jimmy Hoefer of Islip, discussed why the mechanic should be involved in these decisions. He said the chief, who makes many requests, is there for a short time and the mechanic has to work on this apparatus for many years. Unfortunately, there were no pictures taken at the meeting.

After a raffle the meeting was adjourned.
